Many people still think that disabled people are limited by their \u2018different\u2019 mental and physical being. The truth is much more complicated than that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The limitation, quite often actually comes from the environment itself that is created by society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a society, we, disabled people. We design and make things that are difficult for people in many ways, such as to work, to express themselves, and to live their social lives<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1c1969a elementor-blockquote--button-color-custom elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-blockquote--button-view-icon-text elementor-blockquote--button-skin-classic elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"1c1969a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\tPeople are disabled by barriers in society, not by their impairment or difference. Barriers can be physical, like buildings not having accessible toilets. How often do you even see signage in Braille in public spaces in Indonesia? These are just small examples of visible physical barriers that exist for people to access places, we haven\u2019t even talked about the equally sad state of non-physical barriers.<\/p>\n<p>People who are \u2018different\u2019 are often stigmatised, discriminated, undermined and they do not receive the same opportunities as everyone else.<\/p>\n<h3>So, why do we need to embrace disabled people?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>First of all, it is law.\u00a0 Governed by the Indonesian constitutional law : Undang-Undang No.8 Tahun 2016<\/li>\n<li>Secondly, to be protected from all types of discrimination is Human Right<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Imagine if disabled people are enabled and free from barriers that we created as a society? Surely we as a society will benefit from all the talents they can offer and we are missing out on.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-83b5ab6 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"83b5ab6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-43262e2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"43262e2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disabled People in Indonesia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a lot of people in Indonesia that are disabled. Everyone might have experienced it at least once in their lifetime.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c5eadb3 elementor-blockquote--button-color-custom elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-blockquote--button-view-icon-text elementor-blockquote--button-skin-classic elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"c5eadb3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\"People have limited view on what they think is disability. Disabled people are considered a not-ideal human being. Often considered as a charity case, a disabled person is considered as someone who has to be helped and given money to, at the same time they are considered as a way\/platform for people to do good.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a1a2f29 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"a1a2f29\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f054b3b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f054b3b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Different Indonesian Terms<\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Indonesia there are different terms in describing deaf people and people with speech difficulties.\u00a0 According to the head of Bali Deaf Community:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Tuli (<\/strong>too-lee) is more of a colloquial way to describe being deaf, but it also used as a collective noun to describe those who uses sign language.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Tuna Rungu<\/strong> (too-na roong oo) is a medical term to describe deaf. <strong>Tuna Wicara<\/strong> (too-na wee-cha-ra) is a medical term for those with speech disability.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Editor\u2019s note: The same with Bisu (bee-soo) for those with speech disability<\/span><\/p><h4>Disability or Diffable?<\/h4><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the difference between the two terms? Both are from English terms. Difable are more widely used in Indonesia than disability, as it is translated to <\/span><b>unable.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diffable is from\u00a0 differently-abled, the consensus said that being different or understanding that disabled people \u2018are just different\u2019 not\u00a0 that they are <\/span><b>unable.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are using more the term disability, because as we mentioned earlier, we believed that it is the society and environment we build as society that are disabling people.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately both terms, exist to replace the negative term of \u2018penyandang cacat\u2019 in indonesian which directly translated to \u2018those who are deformed or handicaped\u2019<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the next article we are going to talk about <a
